The Capacity for Language
Curling into my chest,
she forms a comma
with her body,
creates a capitalized pronoun
by pressing velvet forehead
against the smooth page of my own.
Ellipses of whiskers
tickle eyelids,
cold nose the dot
of an exclamation point
as paws bracket cheeks in
tender parentheses.
Written on my body with hers,
the wordless declaration
conveyed with consummate clarity,
from feline heart
to human
and returned in kind.
